review 1: This was one of those books that I gave myself until page 100 to decide whether I would give up or read on. Before the deadline arrived, I became interested enough in the characters and story to continue. I think the initial turn-off was the plethora of tried and true plot elements- girl so infatuated with older brother's friend that she can't see her childhood guy friend's interest in her, older brother who ignores younger sister or treats her poorly the few times he does acknowledge her presence, parents who shield their children from the seriousness of their father's illness, girl who wears white sweat pants to school and begins her period (seriously!?). Eventually, the end of the book arrives, and the author quickly ties up all the loose ends. It's confusing and a bit... more unrealistic. The middle of the book is much, much better than the beginning and the end.
review 2: It takes twelve year old Abby a long time to realize that her father has cancer since her parents don't discuss it with her, and even when it has changed her life significantly, she denies it. Abby copes with her father's illness and death with difficulty, and seems to have an even harder time with her mother's grief, all while trying to figure out her changing relationship with lifelong best friend Spence. less
