review 1: When Amy Dickinson's husband walked out on her and their daughter (mostly) she moved back to the tiny Upstate village she was raised in, with all her aunts and almost no uncles. Though she also worked in Washington D.C. and Chicago, she always came back for the summers in Freeville, near- ish Ithaca. Does it make me a bad fan of hers to say I prefer her on "Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me?"“I’ve been a dork for a long, long time. An aggressive strain seems to run through our family, infecting random members with the desire to be contra dancers, sing madrigals, join the AV club. We don’t have math or science smarts, so unfortunately in our clan the dork- trait most often publicly manifests itself not by excelling at academic subjects but by singing Elizabethan music and str... moreolling—while wearing a very unfortunate costume.” (162) Got an autographed copy for a pledge from WAMC in ~2009, read for A- Z challenge, because it’s set in Upstate New York, and because it’s been on my shelf a long time.
review 2: I thought this book was relatively good. I liked that it was just a mother and a daughter as the main characters, also a cat. I thought it was nice how strong the book made the mother feel, and how adaptable and un-fussy the daughter was. I really related to this book, my parents got divorced and I've flown back and fourth between where they both live, and it's hard to live on you own, especially with an extra mouth to feed and a low paycheck. Luckily, the mother gets a new job and she becomes famous within that city. Everyone that sees her and is like "Hey! You wrote that!" She blushes says yes and thanks them for their appreciation. She made it a long way after a life of struggles. Good for her. less
