review 1: A simply beautiful story. The author's depiction of Gloria, a brilliant scholar who prevails through life battling her OCD and forced to listen and take advice from her imaginary friend Oscar, is a beautiful portrayal of the oddities in all of us. Andrea Kaufman masters helping us to appreciate the seriousness of mental illness, while being able to laugh at it,at the same time. The story evolves into a beautiful love story of two truly odd and quirky, yet brilliant and absolutely likable people. You are rooting for both of them to succeed and get past their own demons. The Anglophilic academicians will love the setting in Oxford and the musicians will be blown away by the Van Morrison theme intertwined into the plot. This book is a masterpiece.
review 2:
... moreI'm a little undecided about this one. The beginning did not capture my attention, but by the middle I was interested. It was an interesting take on OCD. Henry's "issue" was obvious early on; I can appreciate how the tension was built with Gloria not knowing, but all the other tiptoeing around was a little condescending to the reader. There also seemed to be a strange obsession with breasts and nipples throughout. less
