review 1: If you have friends or family members who are isolationist, xenophobic or members of the so-called tea party, get them this book and hope they read it. This history of the Berlin Airlift demonstrates what Americans can do when they engage in world affairs and when political motivations are combined with the best the American character has to offer. The preface desribes an elderly woman openly crying in Berlin in the aftermath of September 11. After reading this book, those tears should make every American proud of his or her nation. This book is an antidote to cynicism.

... morel of the historical facts and stories that I personally find so interesting, it has a feel good component that makes one not just proud of being an American, but to belong to the human race where an empathetic act of intelligent disobedience (dropping candy to German children) can cause a monumental shift in National sentiments, affection, and foreign policy. As a side note, I was explaining this story to an LDS friend, describing the actions of the pilot (Halberson) who was from a small Utah town, leading up to the fact that he was LDS. I was stopped short, and was told that one of the members of the LDS First Presidency had recently told this story during the LDS general conference. I'm glad I discovered it accidentally, and glad it is being told in larger circles as well. less
