review 1: What a wonderful book! AMAROK exceeded my expectations. The story moves at a fast pace, yet it's deep enough to keep you immersed in the story. Ms. Townsend creates this micro-world deep in the Alaskan wilderness, a world with its own mysticism and ancient lore that plays well into the story. This novel is a great example of simple story telling done well with fascinating characters, a hostile environment, and great story threads that are woven together extremely well. For a book under 200 pages, AMAROK gives this particular reader more satisfaction than many Young Adult books that are twice as long.
review 2: If you are looking for a different type of YA that incorporates a unique setting steeped in shamanism and native lore, this is your book! Townsend weaves
... more themes of betrayal, love and overcoming the impossible to regain one's humanity. Dual protagonists--a girl trying to escape both an abusive father figure and deep guilt over her mother's unfortunate death, and a boy trapped in the body of an Alaska wolf by an ancient evil that wiped out his family--find one another and discover something long lost for both: trust, friendship and love. less
