review 1: This was a surprising little story. I had made a quick trip to the library to return two books that were due. I had walked to my local branch without my purse or key chains, which holds my library card. So I briefly glanced at the new books that had come out and since I had liked other books by Anita Shreveport, I brought "Stella Bain" home. Often I will quit a book if in the first two chapters it doesn't grab me. And I almost gave up on this one, but because I had nothing else to read, I kept going. And it was really worth going on!
review 2: Anita Shreve is one of my favourite authors, and I have read most of her books. This one is her best, in my opinion. Stella, the main character, is an American volunteer nursing aide during WW1. Her story is engrossing, t
... morehe details of the war evocative, and her character drawn in more detail than other Shreve women. I sometimes find Shreve's female characters too laconic and elusive, but Stella is a firecracker. I was sorry when this book ended, and wanted to remain in its world for longer. less
