review 1: What a hoot! Murder, laughs, a little sex, all kinds of characters...roll that all into a book and you have Laid Out and Candle Lit.Tizzy Donovan is a small-town girl from Texas who just happens to like spending part of her morning run in the local cemetery. Mmmm...yeah, she just might sense some messages from the inhabitants but it's a peaceful place for her to sit and think. Widowed young with a small child, she needs some quiet time. Then one morning she notices someone at her husband's grave and on investigation she finds a dead body...just happens to be her late husband's sister.Tizzy's brother is the local law (shoot, her family is the law, owns a local bar, the bake shop, etc) who calls in the Texas Rangers. When Ridge Cooper arrives things heat up and that's ju... morest Tizzy's reaction to "Trooper Cooper".I didn't give it five stars because it veers into more romance novel (if you don't like sex scenes you may want to take a pass on this one) and the talking to the dead thing gets lost (and it's one thing that drew me to the book). That said, it's enjoyable and funny.
review 2: Danger, love, family, a little sex, and many wonderful characters drive this delightful novel. I really enjoyed the humorous romantic suspense plot, but the best thing about this novel is the way she brings her characters to light with just a few thoughts and expressions that make them sooo real. Having spent many summer days in west Texas, I can relate to some of the delightful expressions in this book although I have never heard my favorite one before describing a kiss as, “an uptown route to downtown business”. The story is well plotted; I could not figure out who the villain was, even though I probably should have and usually do.It is a strange word but I keep thinking this book is smoothly written. Good pacing, appropriate shifts, good editing, excellent story, and a handsome Ranger. Maybe the last one wasn't why it was smooth, just another reason I enjoyed the book. Looking forward to the next one coming out in September. Good Reading. less
