review 1: Pearl, barely nine, always seems to make her sister, Lexie, mad at her. Lexie, who is 13 going on 14, seems to use the phrase "I'm not speaking to you!" with Pearl constantly. The problem is: Pearl doesn't seem to understand what it is she does to make Lexie mad. So she starts to construct a list of ideas that might help her deal with Lexie. "Take her seriously. She has no sense of humor about herself and everything embarrasses her." This means Pearl and her best friend Justine need to stop jumping out and scaring Lexie. Another rule she finds particularly useful is "Listen to what Lexie says, I mean really listen and pay attention. It is important to pay attention." Sometimes Lexie even has good advice for Pearl on how to handle some of her issues.Pearl has other things b... moreesides an angry sister to deal with. Her best friend is two grades behind her in school and the kids in Lexie's 4th grade class don't seem to like her after the "Three Bad Things" that happened in third grade (Show and Tell, Tinkle, and Help! Police). In addition, her grandpa, Daddy Bo, has an accident and must come to live with them. This means Pearl will have to move into Lexie's room for the duration. This could be really good or really bad - it just depends on how much Pearl has learned about dealing with her sister. For all those younger sisters who are trying to understand how to deal with older sisters, there's some good advice here. Pearl comes a long way through the story and begins to understand how to deal with the people in her life in a more positive way.
review 2: This was cute, I felt the story and the family dynamic were very realistic. Pearl had her annoying moments, but it wasn't completely surprising, being a little sister and all. And I liked how Ann M. wrote about Daddy Bo - I know that she was writing from experience, and it was heartbreaking and well-written. That said, I didn't really feel like much happened in this story. It didn't really grip me, or make me eager to read on. But still, I'll read the sequel because I enjoyed the characters and because I adore Ann M. less
