review 1: A parent at school recommended this book to me. I enjoyed the cultural parts about Trinidad and the recipes. In fact, I actually feel inspired to make the trek to the Green Market in Santa Cruz tomorrow (a 40 minute car ride through the windy Northern Range) to find fresher produce than what is available at my neighborhood grocery store. So why didn't I rate this book higher? It glamorizes Trinidad and its food. The reality is most fruit and vegetables sold here have been imported, and that's even true at the central market, a place the author raves about. There's also way too much sugar and starch in Trini cooking, something the author choses to ignore as well. Give me Colombia, Argentina, or even Bolivia for fresh, tasty dishes. It's sad that Trinidad has aband... moreoned agriculture in pursuit of petrodollars, and at some point in the future it could backfire.
review 2: 3 and 1/2 Stars actually. This book is a lot of fun to read. Ann and her husband Steve are fortunate enough to be able to chuck their everyday lives and head off for years at a time to sail the Caribbean, getting to know the people, some of the history and local customs, and the food - ah, the food. Having just come back from my first trip to the Dominican Republic (and having learned not a thing about the place except "Ten minutes" there is like ten minutes in football), and with a love of food memoirs, I was delighted to find this one. Well written, entertaining, and scrumptious! less
