review 1: I heard this author speak at a Ben McNally Books & Brunch event in the summertime, and was blown away by her presentation. She is a beautiful writer, and this book is so profoundly bittersweet, it stayed with me for days afterwards. Set two years after the Great War, leading up to the ceremony of the Unknown Warrior in London, the characters are all walking dead. Whether they are the shells of soldiers who survived and dealing with the guilt and horror of what they've been through, or the families who sent off their sons, husbands, or brothers to war only to have them killed outright, or to have a stranger returned to them, who screams in the night, and is a ghost of their loved one during the day. My favourite book of the year.
review 2: There seems to be an u
... morenusual wealth of World War 1 books. But then again, you learn something new and each one is anti-war but yet the entire world seems to be in a war. She is a competent writer and weaves her story to see the effect it has had on three different classes of people (England does have it's classes). It is a wrenching story that the 3 different women relate and beautifully written. It took a toll on each country that fought in it but seems to have taken a harder toll on Great Britain the hardest. A good book for teens and people in their 30's and 40's who have not had a strong history of the world background. There are lessons to be learned and we simply don't heed them. less
