review 1: I thought this was a great book. I really liked the cast of secondary characters who populated this novel and were fully fleshed out and interesting. Keesey did a great job of capturing the possibility for reinvention in the West (how you could just sort of show up somewhere and be whoever you wanted to be) and the great capacity for eccentricity in people when they are just left to their own devices. I was fascinated by the ways in which everyone's minds worked. I loved Joe's random commentary on things, and the way Ben was so serious about the comic book characters, and Pick's complex motives and stoicism. A great read. (Also read this for book club).
review 2: I've got zero interest in westerns and I only picked this up because I couldn't find anything e
... morelse at the library. I am SO glad I did -- it's about the range wars in Oregon at the turn of the century and a young woman who put herself in the middle of one. It's fascinating, but also deeply emotional and kind of sweet. I still have no interest in westerns, but I've got a lot of new interest in Anna Keesey. less

Another great one! Gripping plot, provocative ideas, and spare but sparkling prose.
