review 1: This was another guilty pleasure :P It was terribly inaccurate, but it followed the pattern of the old (pre-Philippa Gregory) Anne Boleyn novels and yet somehow felt fresh. It also felt comforting to read in a weird way. Some of it was pretty ridiculous but I don't think I was taking it seriously to begin with (and I don't mean that as an insult). I loved how the author was inspired by her family's history to write this book! I think that made me enjoy it a lot more :)
review 2: I found this perspective on Anne Boleyn to be fresh. Most books tell a story of a selfish, ambitious woman who was seeking her revenge against those who destroyed her youthful love affair with a courtier for not being high born enough. This book took a look at Queen Anne from the
... more perspective of her cousin and rival for Henry's affection, Margaret Shelton. Barnhill's story reads more like Philippa Gregory than Jean Plaidy, with court intrigue and romance playing a more prominent roll than trying to keep to historical accuracies. The ending particularly confused me given what we know of Madge historically but putting that aside I was swept back to Tudor England and enjoyed my time there. less
