review 1: Compelling history of the young British women who left home traveling to India to find husbands. If you have any interest in the Raj, this is a book you should read. Why did so many women take that long and dangerous journey? There were few husbands. All those second and third sons tended to leave for the colonies. And a woman needed a husband. So they took a chance, trading a dim life as a governess or spinster for malaria, crushing climate, abject loneliness, and marriage to a stranger. And should they have children, the children would need to take the trip back to Mother England when they were seven or so--and not be seen again for years (the so-called Raj Orphans). Thousands took the gamble.
review 2: This was a book recommended to me by my cousin ,
... more who has visited Madras a couple of times to look into our grandfathers and grandmothers lives there before they moved away pre WW1 , and was an enthralling read . I'm probably biased in the books favour by our family " history " but feel it contributed to a much greater understanding of Grandmas behaviour , manners and attitudes . A fascinating read . less
