review 1: What a book! I would recommend this to anyone who is fascinated with Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville, a couple who married for love. Jane Shore married as her father wished but unhappily he was not the man for her. Her role as Edward's mistress is a complicated one, balancing discretion with helping friends and acquaintances if she felt they were being unjustly treated by interceding with Edward. Happily she found happiness where she could but such a shame she ended up begging to make ends meet. She was admired by many during her life not least by Sir Thomas More and I want to find out more about her.
review 2: Anne Easter Smith is a great writer of historical fiction, I've read everything she's written and Royal Mistress is every bit as good as its predecess
... moreors. Before reading, I didn't know much about Jane Shore, other than she was Edward IV's mistress and took up with Will Hastings after the king died. Jane had a wonderfully exciting life, not always wonderful but always eventful, and it was great to learn about her life both before and after King Edward. The part about Thomas More running into her very late in Jane's life was the stuff fiction is made of, so amazing that it actually happened! Difficult to put down and easy to love, Royal Mistress is one of my Top Ten histfic books of the year. less

Interesting enough to finish, but something about the characters fell flat for me.
