review 1: DNF. I really wanted to like this book. I really really tried hard. I am a significant number of pages in (over 250)...and I just can't do it. There were flaws from the beginning. Those flaws turned into irritations. Those irritations turned into glaring off-putters...and then the whole thing just stopped making any semblance of reasonable common sense. I'm going to bow out gracefully. Or maybe not so gracefully, after I compose my full review.
review 2: I wanted to enjoy this book more, but I kept finding myself just not caring and somewhat confused at times. A large part of my DNF-ing this one was the heavy emphasis on the romance over the political/military goings on and the magic. Perhaps if the romance hadn't been given so much page-space I would have... more been more capable of caring, but it just distracted from the aspects of the story I really was interested in. It also felt as though some of the mystical aspects were too vague to comprehend what was happening which pretty much became the kiss of death for my interest in this. I stopped at page 241. less
