review 1: This was a solid read. It exposes, with a microscope and telescope, daily life under Iran's increasingly irrelevant theocracy in the 2005-2007 time frame from the perspective of an Iranian-American journalist who returned to live, marry, and have children in Iran with her enlightened Iranian husband - businessman. The book does not settle for marginalizing the regime. It takes stock of the youngish people's culture and the trade-offs those people, fundamentalist to humanist, make to continue living in the country that they love in the face of this irrational dictatorship.
review 2: I don't get it. Such a badly written book by such a stupid woman. I was so frustrated with her rambling and complaining throughout and when she says that what her husband wrote i
... moren a book as a proposal to her was the most romantic thing she ever read, without telling us what he wrote, I almost stopped. But I have made a promise to get through every one of my book club's books and so I went on. There is never a good reason for her to live in this county that smells badly of 1984 and even the final reason why she decides that she can't live there any more is so stupid I could hardly stand it. It was interesting to learn about this terrible government but try learning about it another way, there is no good reason to read this book. less

Author seems to have a slight identity crisis but a good read on micro and macro life in Iran today.

Very good book about life in Iran. The things we take for granted here are rare there.

Loved this book, even more than Lipstick Jehad. Looking forward to her next book.
