review 1: Because reports of life in Iran are so limited, this is an interesting read about how the population lives their day-to-day lives...who knew it's the elective surgery capital of the world for nose jobs?! And during the time period the author begins this book (2005-6), women are expected to cover up when out in public, but not necessarily in black - bright colors & prints were quite common before a crack down. They have internet access - though oftentimes too many websites are blocked - a search for breast cancer research is blocked due to the name of the body part...they have international tv channels - unless the government recently confiscated satellite dishes, one by one, from neighborhoods...Some parts are challenging to read as she wanders through an intellectual soul... more search to justify living and raising a family in Tehran - being American born, she is fortunate to have the choice of living in the west or the east.
review 2: An enjoyable and enlightening read. As I had thought most Muslims living in Iran have severe and frustrating restrictions placed upon them by the religious fundamentalists that wield great influence over the government. The ordinary average populace do what they can to overcome these areas of censorship and behaviour including the ridiculous dress standards. I can appreciate now why there are so many riots in Iran which mainly are made up of the younger generation. They must be so frustrated!I have throughout recent years had some very nice Muslim friends and respect what they believe in but do fear for my country (New Zealand) when I have to encounter fully masked black clad persons walking around the streets of my South Pacific, city as I think this is just the tip of a fundamental Muslim iceberg. I mention this as the author mentions these same fears for Britain in the closing stages of her book.Am now off to request her first book, "Lipstick Jihad" from the library. less
