review 1: Halfway through I put this book down and took a break, temporarily unable to deal with any more bodily fluids. I was also a little disappointed by its fragmented nature; I'd unconsciously been expecting something like Alice Pung's 'Her Father's Daughter', a memoir with a coherent narrative. The trouble was that I hadn't read the cover properly. The first description of the book in Alice Pung's back cover endorsement is 'scatological'; and the blurb describes the book as 'a linked series of tales'. Read this book aware that that's what it is, and prepared for all the urine and faeces and blood, and it's amusing and occasionally moving.
review 2: The Family Law is an amusing collection of anecdotes by Benjamin Law candidly sharing the joys and traumas of growing
... moreup in his eccentric Chinese Australian family on the Sunshine Coast. And there is a nice balance of humour and reflection as he presents personal anecdotes honestly but in a way that ties them to bigger issues. Indeed, the stories are told in a way that is easy to relate to despite the Law family’s ‘quirkiness’. Even his mother’s bluntness and crude language is actually quite endearing, adding colour and character to the tales. Very funny. A relaxing, light read that I was anxious to return to each time I had to put it down. less
