review 1: Travel adventure with a pink twist. Law travels around Asia providing a kind of gay state-of-the-minority view - but it is more than just fun and froth. His observations of gay resorts in Bali, a Thai transsexual beauty pageant, celebrity pursuit in Japan, the deeply closeted lives of gay Chinese, sex workers in Myanmar, religious crazy in Malaysia, and a Pride parade in New Delhi reveal much about the social structures of the region. By turns funny and horrifying, Law's book gives us plenty to think about, and shows that despite great strides, there is so much farther to go.
review 2: Look, I won’t lie. I think I have a man-crush on Benjamin Law who reduced me to tears and fits of hysteria last year with his first title, The Family Law. In my opinion, Benjam
... morein is one of the brightest young minds in Australia (too much?) and he’s a funny bastard to boot. In Gaysia, he explores the lives of GLBTIQ people throughout Asia and wonders how his own life would have been different had he not been afforded the good fortune of growing up as a gay man in (relatively) tolerant, liberal, democratic Australia. It’s not all gags and frivolity with some truly grim accounts of the hardships and dehumanising conditions suffered through abroad. Track it down and read it. less
