review 1: I'm already a fan of Beth Lisick's, and this collection of shorts (and a few poems), each one detailing a different humiliation, is my favorite of her writing so far. Her humor is as brilliant as always, but the darkness of this book adds depth in the form of painful and gorgeous relatability. We have all said or done the wrong thing at some point. The more neurotic (or empathetic?) of us have then carried those little clouds around with us, reliving them at darker moments, forever kicking ourselves for slights and missed chances that go as far back as childhood. It's impressive that Lisick has turned those bitter grapes into a fine, nuanced wine. (In other words, I freaking love this book!)
review 2: This was a relatively quick read - I read it before going to
... more sleep or on the metro. I'm planning to read her other books, but I didn't love this as much as I loved "Meaty," an Emily Gould book. I asked Emily what I should read in the same vein as Samantha Irby's "Meaty." Let's get real - I was thrilled to get a personal recommendation and I liked this book. For confession-y lit, "Meaty" is tops, but I liked Lisick's voice and already checked out her other two books after reading Kindle sample chapters. less
