review 1: I absolutely loved this book. This is one of the best books I have read in a while. I had come across Beth Howards, The World Needs More Pie facebook page a few months ago, and while following that page, I found out that she is an author. I finally picked up this book at the book store and I just simply loved her story. Her way of writing just speaks to you and her story about her love, her loss and her healing is just amazing. Being from Iowa I felt a connection with her descriptions of Iowa, of Eldon, and of the American Gothic House, although I really wish that I had been able to make the trip to Eldon, Iowa while she was still living in the American Gothic House and running the Pitchfork Pie Stand! This book is a must read for just about anyone! You will lov... moree it!
review 2: I had such high hopes for this book. I love well written memoirs. I love baking, and I love pie. A winning trifecta! Except this book was a drag. The writing was uneven. Every time I thought the author was pushing forward to talk more deeply about how baking helped her cope with the grief of losing her husband, she got mired in the slog of her grief. I don't mean that in any disrespectful way, but when writing about her pain and loss she covered the same ground over and over again. If you are looking for a good memoir about grief and coping read Joan Didion. less

I like her, though the pie metaphors are a bit forced. I love the idea behind what she is doing.

I couldn't get on board with the autobiographer. So I had to stop.

Making piece was her way of dealing with grief one pie at a time.

emoitional but worth it. You will bake a pie at the end.
