review 1: Here's a book of attitude, a plea to the uninitiated, and an apology for the bike fanaticism that the author, one suspects, hopes may soon be inspired by the clarity and sensibility of the simple bicycle. Certainly the author is inspired. His discussion of the biking life is also something of a plea to see through the fear surrounding biking--and much of modern life--and return to an activity whose worth cannot be disputed, as transportation, as exercise, as fun. Don't look for specific bike tips. His advice is of the zen simplicity kind. He advocates just riding, recommends cutting through the complexity that may sell more bicycles but also disturbs the experience. For this alone he gets big points.Somehow, he seems to imply, close connection to bicycles leads to a greate... morer awareness of the obstacles we mistakenly think hold us back. As an experienced curmudgeon and cyclophile myself, I cannot say he is wrong.
review 2: This book really has it all. For the novice who is beginning to learn about the bike the anecdotes help build comfort. For the experienced cyclist the book provides extra tips about things that are often overlooked. Most importantly though the non cyclist can also get some insight into the world of cycling (i.e. expectations about cost, theft and crashes) through the wit and organized approach seen in here. Simply put I was very satisfied with this gift to myself and I would recommend it to anyone who is on the fence about choosing to commute or has a burning sensation to race or whatever on a bike. less
