review 1: Locomotive was a book written all about trains and how they work and what is was like to take a journey on one across America. This book is full of facts and is incredibly informative for those who are wanting to learn more about trains and how they operate. I personally read this book because I have always wanted to go on a train ride and this book does well to describe to readers not only what it is like to ride a train, but also what has to go on "behind the scenes" to get the train to move. It does well for this book to be in my database, because as a future teacher there are many students who are likely to be interested in trains and how they work, and even for students who do not like to read, this book can be something that they will be interested in if they like tr... moreains. Not to mention, the illustrations are incredible and can draw in almost anyone. There is so much to be learned from this book, about trains and how they work. I will keep it in my classroom, but I believe it will only hold the interest of the children who love trains.
review 2: Floca is AMAZING! No wonder this book was chosen as a Caldecott Medal winner. Any child who likes trains would love this book! The illustrations make the story feel so life-like. Floca takes us on a journey across the deserts and plains. He tells us all about the jobs that take place on the train such as the conductor, the fireman, and the engineer. He talks about the people and sometimes how the trains can be crowded. It also took a few days for a train to get from one destination to another. I also loved the History lesson at the beginning of the book and the picture of Abe Lincoln (those drawings are phenomenal as well). The back of the book is also great because it shows all the different parts of the train. When I finished reading this book I realized that it was actually a pretty lengthy book. I think that Locomotive would be best suited for a 2nd or 3rd grader. less
