review 1: Thanks Brian Rowe for an accommodating read. I've given it two stars because it was accommodating, not inspiring. The premise of this novel is a food one: Cameron is the archetypal high school superstar, lynch-pin of the basketball team, handsome, paired off with the all-American hot girl, great house, car, toys, rich family - this guy has it all.Or does he? As you read, you realise Cam is an empty shell, just like everything else in his life. The girlfriend he has finally pinned down is a vapid wannabe-actress who dangles but never really connects; his father while successful is essentially an image-obsessed sociopath; and, his mother a HipsterYummy Mummy. The only real person in his family is his young sister Kimber - and she's an introverted, needy pre-teen with self e... moresteem issues! So, Cameron cruises through life concentrating on his own sense of entitlement, living his little cliché'd stereotype of an existence - until he he fakes a birthday to get cake (again) at his favourite restaurant and suddenly begins ageing a year every day ... The book is, essentially about how he (and his surface-deep accompanying cast) deals with this (or, fails to deal with it). There is the usual redemption trope and some pretty freaky relationship transformations but essentially the book doesn't really explore much depth, either in characterisation, or in plot development. It's not a bad read. The pacing is good and the writing, while not lyrical, is eminently readable - but I'm a little confused as to the audience. Lacking sufficient depth for older teens, the sexual innuendo and circumstances make it too old for younger ones. All in all, a solid two, maybe two and a half stars.
review 2: {my thoughts} - This book is about a seventeen year-old boy named Cameron Martin and a girl named Liesel Maupin. Cameron is a boy that likes to obtain free gifts for his birthday so he tells people on a daily basis that it is his birthday in order to get free things. One day he and his friends some of them know and some of them don't do this it's his birthday scam and the next day everything changes for him. Eventually through the worst of situations that force him to find himself, realize what a jerk he had been and who his real friends are he begins to find a will and a desire to do better in his life. I really enjoyed reading this book because it was different as in not something I had read before, and it was well written with a nice storyline and plot. I look forward to reading the second book in this series.{reason for reading} - It was a free download on Amazon and I figured why not, since it sounded interesting and even if it turned out I didn't like it I wasn't losing any money. It was worth the download. less
