review 1: You know, I loved the idea of this book. I loved that someone was writing a book to bring awareness to the epidemic of homelessness. I loved the idea that this book was bringing to light the fact that homeless people are not all addicts or mentally ill, that a few wrong choices in an otherwise completely "normal" existence could end your life as you know it. I did not, however, love this book. The author was in her twenties when she wrote this book, and it shows. I felt empathy for her, if only because of the poor choices that she was making. I've been there, believe me. I did not feel like this was even a book about homelessness in the end, just a book about a girl who is really bad with money. I have been broke. Really broke. In my past I have been so broke that I still h... moreoard canned goods in my pantry (just in case). I really have to say that as someone who, while not homeless, has lived without enough money to even get my kids something small for their birthdays or Christmas, it really bothers me that she waxes poetic about how hard it is to be homeless when she practically threw her money away flying her boyfriend all over the place, buying engagement rings and paying for hotel rooms for weeks at a time. I, as someone who has never been good with money either, truly understand how these things can happen, but also, I have never written a book complaining about how hard my life is.Have you ever gone back to a journal entry of yours from a few years ago, and been vaguely embarassed by your supremely naive younger self? That is how I felt reading this book. I believe that this author will be great once she's gained a little bit of perspective, but for now, her writing is just not for me.
review 2: Not sure what to make of this story at all. It's a memoir about a life full of pain and drama that goes quickly off the rails. It offers insight into homelessness, but it's really a story about a romance that falls apart. She drags quite a lot of people through the mud (some who probably deserved it) and in the end I'm left with this horrible feeling, completely unsure of whether to believe any of it. The fact that her blog, which launched the book, is no longer online and how the author's name and "liar" are among suggested results for Google really makes you wonder. It's the kind of story I'm not sure I wanted to know, though I will say that believable or not, good choices or not, she does present the reality of how quickly things can fall apart and anyone can find themselves with nowhere to live. less

This was really an eye opener, but not at all what I expected. A happy ending would've been nice.
