review 1: 3.3.5 starsThis was an enjoyable story. I liked Janos and Scarlett was an interesting character. This was an insta-love situation but with the dragon mating bond it works for the story.Scarlett was a child prodigy in music and became one of the worlds biggest teen idols. She had a wonderful life until right before her 22nd birthday when an attack killed her fiancee and friends and left her almost dead. After surviving the attack, Scarlett went in to hiding and has stayed out of sight for 7 years. She thinks she's safe until a man named Janos warns her she's being followed by a man that intends her harm...and she recognizes the man Janos points out as one of her attackers from years before. Janos is the elder of his dragon clan, a position he took reluctantly when his paren... morets passed away. He's one of the youngest elders and feels the weight of his station, taking the welfare of his clan seriously. He's in the city for a meeting of the elders when he finds Scarlett, recognizes her as a potential dragon's mate and realizes someone is following her. He knows he has to save her, even against her own will.Scarlett is attracted to Janos but isn't willing to fall for his line of "come with me if you want to live". Fortunately for her, he doesn't take no for an answer and gets her away from the bad guy (and she recognizes him as one of her attackers from years before). Scarlett realizes she's in trouble but also isn't sure Janos is any safer. She tries to get away from him but when djinns and elves (2 races that hate dragons and work together to try to kill their mates to kill off the race) start attacking, Janos is forced to change in to dragon form to get her to safety and Scarlett doesn't take that too well. Both of them aren't willing to admit their mates at first but eventually it gets impossible to ignore. When Scarlett finds out about mating and what she'll have to do and go through she's very reluctant to change her life that way but the mating fever wont let her say no so she agrees to consummate their relationship.Although Scarlett is willing to an extent, she realizes pretty quickly that Janos is rather Alpha and she's going to have problems keeping herself from being smothered by his bossiness. Determined to see her cousin before leaving town with Janos, Scarlett pulls a TSTL move and sneaks away where the bad guys can find her and almost gets killed. Janos is able to save her and Scarlett seems to settle down after that, accepting her love for Janos and being willing to start a life with him. The main problem ends up being her cousin, Athena, who is also a potential dragon's mate and is staying with them at Janos' compound. Athena is freaked about the dragons and thinks Scarlett has been brainwashed so she manages to kidnap Scarlett, trying to get them both away from the dragons. There's some action and drama as Scarlett gets away from Athena only to get attacked by more djinn and elves. Janos finds her and they save each other but then, in the confusion afterwards, Scarlett is split from everyone else and they can't find her. It takes some time and effort but eventually she is found. Scarlett and Janos get things worked out between them and start their HEA.This was a good story. I really liked Janos, he's kind of gruff bossy but protective and sweet deep down. Scarlett was alright, although there were times when she was a bit over the top and she did have that TSTL moment but overall she worked in the story and I liked her and Janos once they get things worked out. There was a good setup in this story for the next book in the series and I'm curious so I may read it. :)
review 2: Ms. Paulin is a hit or miss with me. This one was a miss. It wasn't bad, it just didn't do it for me. Scarlet is a character who I want to hit upside the head. I'm surprised she's not dead and I'm a bit disappointed. Janos is an okay guy. I didn't find him attractive. The only things cool about him are his wings and he's a dragon.I love dragons. Dragon shifters trip my trigger. For me to rate a dragon story just okay, it takes a bit since I have a soft spot for any dragon story. This story was just okay because the conflict stemming from lack of communication is not a trope I enjoy. Characters making bad decisions even though they know it's bad causes me to grind my teeth. I grind my teeth so I can get through the story without throwing my kindle across the room. Scarlet is too stupid to live. Let her die. This world Ms. Paulin created is too sketchy for me. It is also probably because I have a bias with a love for elves. Why are the elves evil here? What is the conflict between the dragons and elves? I understand an author giving only pieces of the story to ensure there is more to reveal in the books following. Unfortunately, this book did not catch my attention enough to hook me into it and read the subsequent books in the series. The predictable path this story took was just okay for me. I am still a Ms. Paulin fan. This book just didn't do it for me. I think this book is best for those who enjoy dragon shifters and a fast little mind candy read. less

The story was hardly amazing but at least the sex and the dragon-vampire biting was hot.
