review 1: What a great musician and song composer is Burt Bacharach. I was amazed at the number of "standard" best-selling songs this man has written (many along with Hal David writing lyrics and Dionne Warwicke singing). He does a masterful job of taking the reader into his mind as he describes how many of these songs were composed. For the most part, he has led a charmed life (handsome, good personality, lady killer, artistic, a long life (he is eighty -five years old). But he has been married four times to four different women. Thankfully for him his last wife Jane has been with him for twenty + years and bore him three children. But he has had some rough sports, as most humans do. His marriage to movie star Angie Dickinson did not last and the child they had together Nik... moreki was born with Asperger's syndrome, now commonly referred to as autism. But when the baby was born, the problems she had were not diagnosed. The poor child suffered along with Burt and Angie a distressful life, in an out of hospitals and treatments. At one point Rikki spent 10 years in the UCLA hospital. Her life ended in a sad episode which Burt bravely tells in the book. Also, he has suffered health problems since he was 71. But he continues on with his music. A great read for music lovers.
review 2: I've idolized Burt Bacharach since I was 10 years old. We love him for his melodies, orchestration and musicality, but words have never been his strong suit. And this book demonstrated that. On the other hand, to learn about his life and personality, his partnerships and motivations, and the interplay of talent and hard work... Well, to me ~ a songwriter ~ it's priceless. I learned a lot and was inspired and fed as a musician. What more could ya ask for? less
