review 1: When I ready a history book, it is always better to read about a topic that I am totally unfamiliar with and this is a time period that I think is overlooked in american history.Other than knowing he was one of our less famous Presidents, I did not know anything about James Garfield until I read 1861 A Civil War Awakening. Garfield was one of many people in that book. This was about 20 years before coming President and I was impressed with Garfield's in 1861 and thought he was a man ahead of time and was interested in learning more about his Presidency. There was so many interesting parts of this book from how Garfield became President, to the fascinating dillusional person who shot him, the terrible medical care Garfield got, Chester Arthur and Alexander Graham Bell. Thi... mores is a fairly short faced paced book that I highly recommend.
review 2: A fantastic true story, written in a very flowing manner (almost as if it was historical fiction). It is a true page-turner, shining light upon the often unknown yet admirable, accomplished, and unfortunately tragic figure of our 20th President. It is also full of wonderful character portraits, from the deranged Guiteau (who, if not for his crime, would otherwise be largely comedic in his delusions) to an industrious and obsessively young(er) Alexander Graham Bell. Millard writes so engagingly that the 300 pages flew by. Even those with mild interests in history will enjoy it. less
