review 1: I'm not sure if I maybe had been reading some totally different book, but mine didn't work for me it all. I normally rather like Carol Lynne's stories, but this one was not good :/ Full of bad vampire cliches and group sex at the end. Then I started the second story by my favorite DJ Manly and AJ Llewellyn and it started out good, but later on turned into some multi-partner sex scene and I gave up.Maybe another time.
review 2: "Stolen Memories" by Carol Lynne [2 stars:]: Like many of Carol Lynne's fics, there just seemed to be too much in this short, too many characters and too many tie-ins, for anything to real sink in or have an affect. The main character is a writer who is abused by his boyfriend but then saved by a vampire who has [basically:] been stalking
... more and lusting after him his whole life. Then there's the vampire's best friend, the vampire's best friend's 'Papi' [who is a brawny human cop:], and all of them have no problems with sharing each other in bed. Then there comes the main chara's genetic history and ... well, it was just too overwhelming and didn't capture my interest even in the midst of what could have been a great read if only a few things could have been left out."Stealing Rain" by DJ Manly and AJ Llewellyn [3 stars:]: From vampires to space-men ... "Stealing Rain" is about two men who used to be lovers but fell apart when one took the military track and the other took the merc way of life. Water is an extremely rare commodity which is an interesting twist, and the history the men have with water and rain in specific is romantic and sweet. But the action was pushed forward by jealous 'friends-with-benefits' who turns a bit psychotic as the story moves on, and both men are kept prisoner and border-line sexually abused by the other [despite the fact that they still love each other??:]. Again, great idea to begin with but not so much in the execution."Hotwired Heart" by Jaime Samms [5 stars:]: On first beginning this short story I wasn't sure I'd like it; started out with a theft, murder, shady relationships and a casual look on sex with strangers that I'm just not fond of. Sticking with it though, I'm happy to say it fleshed out and became one of the most charming stories I've read. Mark is a genuinely good guy stuck in the wrong circumstances, with a sense of duty and loyalty that aren't seen in too many people. The willingness he showed in accepting Rolly's kindness and help - tempered by the insistence he held to make it on his own instead, build his own life from the scraps, is admirable. And yet his fondness an love for Rolly - shown more in actions than words, especially regarding the leather cuffs. I'll definitely be looking for more from this writer."The Magic Theives" by Serena Yates [3 stars:]: Very unique, and very creative. The relationship/pairing seemed a bit rough and rushed, as did everything really. I can't help but thinkit was condensed too much and came out only half as good as it would have been, should the story have been allowed to tell itself without the boundaries of word or page limits. If it's ever re-written, fleshed out, and turned novel-length, I was soooo read it again and with pleasure."Stealing Michael" by Jambrea Jo Jones [4 stars:]: Definitely enjoyed this one. It was so drastically different than what I expected; still, I would have wished that Robert didn't seem so 'simple-minded' especially in the beginning, and there were a few parts that just didn't make much sense. Robert would have had a crappy job, no place to go, no way to get there, and yet he managed to get his own apartment and live separately from Michael for two whole years? Seemed like a far stretch for me, but I would have been interested to see how the author explained that happened."Dragon's Eye" by Stephanie Hecht [3.5 stars:]: I kept getting a bit turned around in the formation of these characters, which I've noticed happens often with the Stephani Hecht novels I read. I kept thinking of Duncan as the smaller one, possibly the meeker character, and when it turned out to be the sorcerer Trent I was kind of taken off-guard. The rest of it, happily, was great quality. The story is intriguing if not completely original, the conflict between Trent and Duncan's family is honest and believable, and the resolution, while tidy, was alright. There WAS a great deal of schmex and I kind of felt like in the end Trent and Duncan's relationship just hadn't emotionally progressed like it could have. less
