review 1: I have mixed feelings about my review and the book. First, I didn't think the jacket or the beginning really gave the reader any idea of the true topics in the book. So I was disconcerted as I read because what I was reading wasn't what I expected. That being said, I enjoyed the book greatly and read it just about in one sitting. As a breast cancer survivor, the author and I speak the same language, and I loved reading the lessons she learned from Mr. Owita, even if the lessons didn't really involve gardening. I really wanted to find out all of the twists and turns in their friendship.
review 2: I was disappointed by this read. I found it rather self-indulgent and whiny, and for a memoire, rather lacking in growth and substance. Which is a shame, as I had hoped
... more, given the initial pages, that the book would be much better than it was. There were many aspects of this piece that just didn't sit well, not the least of which was the author's seeming inability to look at herself from outside herself. I found, as a result, that there seemed no actual forward movement to her personality other than small glimmers that were often nullified by her repetition of past grievances. Overall, it wasn't the worst book I have read, but I wouldn't likely pick it up again or recommend it to someone else. less

The writing wasn't that great, but I loved the story and the gardening references!
