Nora Grey’s life is still far from perfect. Surviving an attempt on her life wasn’t pleasant, but at least she got a guardian angel out of it. A mysterious, magnetic, gorgeous guardian angel. But despite his role in her life, Patch has been acting anything but angelic. He’s more elusive than ever (if that’s possible) and what’s worse, he seems to be spending time with Nora’s archenemy, Marcie Millar.
Nora would have hardly noticed Scott Parnell, an old family friend who has moved back to town, if Patch hadn’t been acting so distant. Even with Scott’s totally infuriating attitude, Nora finds herself drawn to him – despite her lingering feelings that he is hiding something.
If that weren’t enough, Nora is haunted by images of her murdered father, and comes to question whether her Nephilim bloodline has anything to do with his death. Desperate to figure out what happened, she puts herself in increasingly dangerous situations to get the answer. But maybe some things are better left buried, because the truth could destroy everything – and everyone – she trusts.
I have to say that I definitely did not enjoy this book as much as the first and would say it is definitely more problematic but it still managed to entertain me even if it was in the bad horror movie that you watch for fun kind of way.
Starting with the fact that the majority of this installment centers around the relationship. Yes the main plot points focus around arguments, teenage romance, and forced love triangles. I had hoped this was only going to be a minor piece but it over took the plot and forced itself in front of all the world building parts and the backstory I was desperately hoping to learn about. Besides that and the fact that this story gives off bad messages about relationships (both unrealistic and overly controlling) it was just not a thing I had hoped was going to be the center of the story.
Besides the relationships I have to say my thoughts on the main characters may have flipped in this book. Originally I enjoyed our main character, Nora, and heavily disliked her love interest/boyfriend, Patch. This time around I felt like they were both making dumb decisions that not only didn’t go with their character but that that in general did not add to the story.
Another issue I had with the story was that the plot was all over the place. As I mentioned it mostly focused on the relationship but the pieces we got about the over arcing plot were so small that they felt really insignificant.
While I had a lot of problems with this story it did manage to keep me interested and reading so that was a good thing. I find that I really enjoy Fitzpatrick’s writing style because she makes it easy to fly through so many pages without even realizing it.
Overall I would not recommend this for the fact of how badly it portrays the relationship and the many issues with in it but it did keep me reading.
