review 1: This text takes the reader through Harlem's historic neighborhood of Sugar Hill during the Harlem Renaissance. The reader is introduced to various influential African American writers, musicians, and poets of the time. The book has a lyrical tone, and contains a playful interaction between text and pictures. Although there is not much of a storyline, the beautiful language and pictures make the book effective for a read aloud. The book is also bursting with African American pride. The vibrant liveliness of the people of Sugar Hill is communicated on every page. The author also provides a list in the back of the book for the reader to learn more about the mentioned historic names. It's tone and style serve as an excellent representation for the culture of the Harlem Renaiss... moreance.
review 2: This love letter to the Sugar Hill neighborhood during the Harlem Renaissance introduces readers to the many influential African Americans who lived, worked, and were raised in that culturally rich area. The simplistic text consists of well chosen words that read like poetry. The artwork and text work so well together I hesitated turning the page, wanting to dwell on each spread for a long minute. They worked together so well the overall effect for was akin to looking at travel posters advertising the many sights and sounds of the neighborhood, enticing me to visit.Back matter includes an author's note, and a who's who section with bio blurbs for each of the people mentioned in text. This book is excellent! Great read aloud for use during Black History Month for sure, but year-round as well. Read this, share this with kids ranging from K-6. less
