review 2: Mo Money, Mo Problems! For those, like myself, exhausted an
... mored frustrated by one dimensional story lines that lack character development, Caroline McGill's fourth novel, A DOLLAR OUTTA FIFTEEN CENT 3, will come as a relief. It's a welcome reminder that some folks still know how to write layered stories with interesting, dimensional characters. Whether it's Portia, Laila, Fatima or one of the guys, each character is distinct with their own personality and issues. DOLLAR OUTTA FIFTEEN CENT 3: MO' MONEY...MO' PROBLEMS concerns the friendship of Portia, Laila and Fatima. Pregnant and happily married, Portia's house and affairs seem to be all in order. Of course, the occasional drama pops off, but nothing she can't handle. No relationship is beyond tests. Can Portia handle the ultimate test? Fatima is lost and grieving the death of her husband, Wise. She doesn't know if she's coming or going. Sinking deeper and deeper into depression, Fatima finds solace. But is it the help she really needs? Laila has a crackhead husband, a dead daughter and a married lover. Can things get any worse? Yes! After a horrific accident, she can't walk. Wallowing in self-pity, Laila sets out to drive everyone she loves away before they walk away. Will it work? Love, friendship and forgiveness are intregal parts of this story. Weighing in at almost 400 pages, it takes its time. While part three doesn't pack the punch and intensity of book one and two, it's definitely a contender. McGill's third-person narrative flows smoothly, allowing the drama and plot to branch out in many directions. A very worthy effort. My motto for '09 is: Just Say No to Sequels! Like so many, I'm tired of them. They've lost their nostalgia because everyone and their momma, aunt, uncle and cousin is writing one. BUT...there's always an exception to the rule and Caroline is among the very few that has the talent and skill to make readers want more. That said, I'm looking forward to another fix (and some more time with my boo Cas) with A DOLLAR OUTTA FIFTEEN CENT IV: MONEY MAKES THE WORLD GO 'ROUND. Now, I'm a stickler so I gotta go there because it was very distracting for me. I hope with future releases an editor that has a better grasp of punctuation is utilized. The editor made or allowed for the same errors repeatedly. 1) Commas were misplaced outside of quotation marks. (Jay walked Jayquan upstairs to his room for a "man to man". AND When I asked Mama Mitchell, she said, "no".) An error I'm finding more and more with books today. I think it's gotten to the point where people see it in other books and assume it's correct. There are occasions when punctuation does belong outside the quotation marks, and a good editor knows when. 2) Commas used after appropriate punctuation was already used. ("Are you all suspects in these murders?",) 3) Apostrophe S. The s was always missing in reference to Wise. (Outside of Wise' hospital room.) Again, I hope this is fixed before the next release.
