review 1: An impressive, inspiring woman...but an infuriating read. I appreciated her honesty and greatly value her work for democracy in China, but once she starts trying to indoctrinate the reader- she lost me. There are countless other Nobel peace prize nominees and winners who were guided by their religion, wrote a memoir, and then didn't try and shove religion down their readers' throats. When the last page asked me to consider Jesus in my life, I closed the book and threw it across the room. I was so angry at the author's inconsiderate behavior to her readers that I ran to Leymah Gbowee's autobiography to see if she would act in the same manner to her readers-- she did not and that is certainly an autobiography worth reading. I highly recommend skipping Chai Ling's ... morework.
review 2: I found this book to be very thought-provoking and riveting. While reading it, my eyes were wide open. I had no clue of the persecution that Chinese families suffer from their own government or how fast the children grow up there. After reading this book, I came to the realization that Americans have it very easy and we should be ashamed of ourselves because most of us are too selfish to help those who are persecuted. I also realized how much courage I lacked and I know if I were in Chai Ling's shoes, I probably would have been more concerned with my self-preservation than for helping to bring freedom to the citizens. I knew of the massacre, but none of the details because this event happened when I was a young child. I never knew how horrible the massacre was or that thousands of people died. I found it to be tragic and mind-boggling. Though I knew of China's one-child policy and favor towards boys, I had no idea of the actual number of babies being aborted in China or the suicides of the grieving mothers. Though this was a good book to read, I have to admit that I felt very overwhelmed afterwards. Chai Ling is right when she says that the only way that China will be changed for the better is if Jesus transforms the hearts of the people and government officials. This is a book that every American should read-it will change your outlook on China forever. less
