review 1: In the middle of a bizarre boom of teenagers discovering that they have the power to turn into a wide variety of spirit animals, our hero tries to stay in the closet about him being one of them, with not a lot of success. One of the differences between fantasy and science fiction is that I don't have a problem with the addition of a single discovery to the world, but it kind of bugs me when there's just a single magical thing in the world and nothing else as in this case. But this is passable young adult stuff.
review 2: I love you Charles de Lint. But no.This was just so terribly typically YA.I couldn't even find your voice within the stereotypical relationships, the double helpings of angst and stupidity, and the characterizations that made me want to facep... morealm every five minutes.There was a very good racist/prejudicial theme going on that was quite nice, but just wasn't worth getting into with all of the above involved.*Sigh* Oh well. No rating will be given, as I have not finished the book and thus cannot give an adequate review on the entirety of the piece, but anything marked as DNF or a book I gave up on is usually around the 1-2/5 mark. less
