review 1: All in all a very informative overview of Kurt Vonnegut's life. I enjoyed learning so much about one of my favorite authors but I was dissatisfied with the very abrupt ending without any kind of epilogue or afterward about events that transpired after Vonnegut's death. The last sentence of the book is simply: "Kurt Vonnegut died on April 11, 2007." Not a very unique way to end a biography, but whatever. It's still a good read for any Vonnegut fan interested in the personal life and development of the author behind so many great works of literature.
review 2: As another reviewer noted, what's missing fr this book is Vonnegut. The writer only got to meet him twice before he died, so it was obviously hard to really infuse a true sense of Vonnegut, especially for a
... more writer who literally jumped into his novels. That being said, I learned a lot about Vonnegut- a man of contradictions. I could get into all of them, but the book does a pretty good job of elaborating them. As I was reading this book, I continuously asked myself: can I deprecate the man and his art? Can I have the same belief in decency when it's one of its biggest advocates couldn't be decent to his own family? It's hard to say: as Shields points out, Vonnegut deliberately put himself into his work, either through autobiographical introductions, or by becoming a character himself. In a way, he fictionalized himself. less

A poor interpretation of his life. Very boring, similar to reading an encyclopedia.

Delightful read. Showed KV as the whole human. Could barely put the book down.

I think the writing advice he gets on page 85 is worth the price of the book.
