review 1: hmm, i'm not too sure how to grade this.this book was a kindle freebie and there's not a whole lot that interests me more than witches and halloween, so grabbing it was a no-brainer.this book begins with a girl named alex. she lives with her alcoholic mother and her dbag father, but other than that lives a pretty charmed life. she drives a nice car, she's reasonably popular, she's got a decent amount of friends. then one day she has a dream in which she sees a girl getting killed... then she finds out that the girl is real and the girl is dead.it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that alex discovers she's a witch, considering the title of the book.some things that didn't work for me about this novel:- a lot of random narrative about characters that aren't exact... morely relevant to the story. alex has a lot of friends, we get that, but a lot of the side stories that get explored feel kind of extraneous.- i enjoy a slow burn as much as the next person, but this was slooooooooooooooooow. you really don't receive a significant amount of plot detail until you've read about 75% of the book.- james and peter, the stories cute boys, fighting over this girl. i felt a distinct lack of chemistry between alex and both guys. james was skeezy, peter was overprotective and overbearing to the point it made me uncomfortable.- this book features a lot of one dimensional characters. bad guys act like bad guys the whole way through. a girl that alex doesn't like and doesn't like alex because some guy likes alex instead is perpetually described negatively, which seemed like a device to show how likeable alex was and what a victim she is.- for a book that explores a girl's exploration into being a witch, we get zilch. nada. we get peanuts. we get her denial throughout the book, we get a couple of exploding lights, we get an abrupt reveal that she is a witch that came off as perfunctory and unrealistic.there are more issues, but those are the significant highlights.some of the things that did work for me about his novel:- bellingeri is actually a great writer. this is a first novel and self-publish to boot and with that in mind i feel as though this book is good for what it is. she's very good at writing slice-of-life scenes and also very good at action sequences. i feel like she had most of the pieces of the story she was trying to write, she just needed someone to help her fit them together, get rid of the unnecessary stuff, and add narrative where necessary.- compulsive readability. despite the problems this book had, it was mostly easy and fun.so that's about it. i think that bellingeri is talented and has the capacity to write a great book. i'll be continuing to read her work and i'm looking forward to seeing her growth as a writer.
review 2: If the author did not break with tradition so much this would have been a 3* read! The three star would not have been a reflection of her skill as a writer but rather a genre that is overrun by authors all writing on the same pat formula. This author however has two things going for her apart from skill...one. The girl chose the right boyfriend and not the bad boy for a change. That made me sit up and take note for I am soooo tired of these love triangles that is so predictable. Then also on this plot theme....our main protagonist does not suffer from the same ole same old teenage angst for endless pages. She is a truly strong character, when she gets overwhelmed she does so in a fashion normal people can associate with. Also our villains was quite cool and unexpected, I had to read almost the entire book before I started to put the pieces together and that is another great +. Do not worry all you YA fans. This author is in no way neglecting you, she is simply making me, a reader of a great many YA books, sit up and take note!WaAr less

a bit predictable and took a while to get to the crux of the story; but, all-in-all, not a bad read.
