review 1: I related to everything in this book! Like Cheryl, I was born in the year of the tiger, studied in the US and became interested in cooking only in the past few years. I'm even Teochew! This book captures the Singaporean family and our intense passion for food perfectly. It may seem fragmented, like what some reviewers have noted, but I think that was done on purpose. It's not supposed to be a story that flows from point A to point B. It's a story made up of memories of Cheryl's childhood (and adulthood) and memories of her family members' lives. I love how she weaved in the descriptions of dishes she learned how to make. Her journalistic background came in handy because she also explained what they were and where they came from. I'm also very excited to learn I am possibly... more a descendent of pirates! Thanks Cheryl!
review 2: I read this prior to my first trip to Singapore to familiarize myself with the food of the city. On that score, it succeeded. However, on the whole I found it a very disappointing read. I didn't think the writing was very good and I found Cheryl to be fairly self-absorbed and conceited. I've read many food-related memoirs and this was probably my least favorite so far. Still, if you are going to Singapore, its not a bad way to learn about some of the food. My two favorite things I tried during my time there I learned of from this book: popiah and kaya. less

The details about food in Singapore are interesting, but the rest wanders and then falls flat.
