review 1: Mild spoilers below (although you could figure them out; it is not difficult with this series heading in the direction it is going).I am still in this series because I rushed out and bought the next seven books after reading and liking the first one. My bad. There is more eye rolling in this book (shock!). It starts on page three, and like the pink Energizer bunny, it keeps on going. Nearly every chapter has an eye roll. Almost every major character gets an eye roll. I do not know how their eyes can stand so much rolling.Ethan is back and behaving like a little boy when it comes to Merit. Frankly, Merit is too much woman for him, so he rejects her again (well, at least through most of the book). Is it something she said? Something she did? No, wait, it is Ethan, af... moreter all. Well, that makes it okay. She will patiently wait it out because Ethan is, well, Ethan and he will change his mind, again. Her pining for him makes little sense to those of us who championed her struggles with him through the first few books. Sure they would probably get together, but he flat-out rejected her--twice. That has to count for something. Right? Nope, not in the Meritverse.I know Mallory screwed up in the last book. I get that. In her defense, which I can see, she became addicted to dark magic. Like an addict, she craved it, it nearly consumed her, and she did horrible things to people around her--people she loved. She did horrible things to her BFF, Merit. I get it, but Merit is no friend to Mallory in this book. I cringed every time she was around Mallory. There was just no understanding and show of support, something, I think, addicts need; they need to see and hear that there are people around them who support them and their efforts to recover. Merit just does not come through for Mallory. Again, I totally get what happened, but Merit is cold--just cold--to her best friend who suffered unimaginable darkness. Merit cannot even bring herself to hug Mallory. That is not right in my book.
review 2: 3,5 starsI was a little wary to start reading this book because I wasn't excited to see more of Mallory. She was getting on my nerves in the previous book if I recall correctly so I hoped it was going to be better in this one. Fortunately, the characters were able to control her more or less...Overall I enjoyed reading this book. I was glad to see that there wasn't a new threat appearing from nowhere at the end, except for the GP but that was expected. I liked knowing that Ethan and Merit's relationship was a little more serious even if it took a long time for him to stop pushing her away. The ending was nicely done but I hope the plot in the next book is less focused on Mallory. :) less
