review 1: "It's better to be at the bottom of the ladder you want to climb than the top of one you don't."I've followed Chris Guillebeau for a little while, recognizing him from his successful quest to visit all the countries in the world. This book was an interesting reframing of finding happiness in a "quest," or in other words, a long-term project with a specific end, rather than searching for a path toward self-acceptance. I enjoyed thinking about some long-term projects I might think, and Guillebeau provides strategies and ideas than only fueled my imagination. He briefly details the quests of many others — a man walking across Turkey, a woman knitting 10,000 hats, another woman whose passion was birding — and I only wish I had gotten more detailed accounts of their adven... moretures.
review 2: I always enjoy Chris Guillebeau's books and this one was no exception. It's fascinating to read about dozens of different quests and learn about the motivations of those who embark on them, their roadblocks, successes, and what they've learned along the way. My only quibble is that the subtitle is "Finding the Quest That Will Bring Purpose to Your Life" and the author provides little practical info about how to do that. Instead, the reader is meant to be inspired by the variety of interesting quests his subjects have achieved: from the mother who cooked a meal from every country to the man who completed the MIT science curriculum in one year to the young woman who circumnavigated the globe solo in a small sailboat, to name just a few. less
