review 1: 3.5 stars. The chapters on the history of the Badlands and the plight of people living on the reservation, on the almost post-apocalyptic disaster that is modern day West Virginia, and maybe New Jersey were interesting, educational, and appropriately depressing. The crap at the end about Occupy, meant to galvanize us libs who were dedicated enough to slog through some of the other chapters, instead seemed to wag a finger at all of us who haven't social media-ed Citizens United, corporatism, and inequality out of existence. Give me a break. The book is at its best telling individual stories, especially through Sacco's on-point illustration.
review 2: I generally don't read many journalists, but I am a big admirer of Chris Hedges, dating back to his eloquent oppo
... moresition to the Iraq War. Joe Sacco is one of my favorite comic writers and the coolest person to have ever graduated from Sunset High School. Of course I read their book. This book is an ugly look at poverty in America's sacrificial zones: Pine Ridge Reservation, Camden, New Jersey, Coal country in West Virginia, and a migrant worker camp in Florida. All are poverty-stricken hellholes that have been abandoned by the institutions that created them. The book offers no solutions, apart from some notes on pressuring the big supermarket chains to accept only fair labor produce. The point seems to be awakening people to what's going on around them and the erosion of the middle class. The only chapter that doesn't really work is the one on Occupy, as it seems unclear to me how well it ties to the other parts. Occupy was not the great revolt we wanted it to be, and at least in the United States, I think it's hard to point to any meaningful outcomes from Occupy. less
