review 1: Very Good in its own way. I have read A Lion's Tale and thought it was great, from his childhood all the way to his 1999 debut. But Undisputed is a little less wrestling and a little bit more of his rock and roll career.Still there are some wonderful personal stories as well as an amazing personality. I have to admit I never noticed this much about him in his previous book, not having watched his matches from his earlier career. But unfortunately he does have a high opinion of himself. Now I admit when he wrestled at first I would have expected him to under perform at first. His triple-threat WrestleMania match was good, but he shouldn't have smarted over not being in the main event. But his title win with Chyna was well-deserved and I felt when Vince chewed him out it was... more mostly because of Hunter's relationship with Vince. But there are other things about Chris that, well. Its okay to be confident, but its a thin like between arrogance. His championship wins with Benoit and his feuds with Stephanie McMahon were fun. Even he admits that his match and reign for the Undisputed Championship was overstated. What match did we remember from WrestleMania X-8? Y2J vs HHH? Or Rock vs Hogan? The matches he fought are truncated with a focus on his rock and roll career. I only followed his hit song "Enemy" but other than that nothing. I did love the chapters on the two people in his life. His mother who in the previous book was made into a paraplegic by her boyfriend. Yet she stood fast until her death. Reading this part really made me sad, but I loved his memories of her when he made two things that got him grounded. Once for buying beer with a phony ID he left behind in the store and another for throwing a racous party of 212 and despite cleaning up next to everything he was still busted for a misplaced lamp. Makes me really appreciate my mother. But probably the biggest chapter was the one written about Chris Benoit. Jericho makes it clear a frequent line about how a match no longer exists. The quote is attributed to Chris Benoit being given a case of damnatio memoriae worse than replacing the WWF logo with the WWE logo. Jericho describes Benoit as a quiet but neurotic man who would be nice but would limit his emotion. He wouldn't smile or laugh, but he'd cry at the loss of a friend. Benoit was probably mentally afflicted from his years on the road, maybe it was steroids or even the concussions. This still gives no reason for every anti-wrestling media entity, from disgraced wrestlers to wannabe journalists to accuse the wrestling company of complicity. I know there will never be a biography written by Benoit, but I can't feel that Jericho would be one of many to pen it as good as he did one chapter.Life goes on, and though he became tired of wrestling for a while he was glad to come back to defend it and was glad for his other options. But this was the place he was meant for. Just like A Lion's Tale ended with his debut in the WWF, Undisputed ends with his return to WWE. B.
review 2: Undisputed begins with Jericho’s hotly anticipated WWF debut at the height of the attitude era. His ensuing struggles to live up to the hype are humorous and entertaining. Juicy backstage tidbits include Jericho’s real heat with Chyna and creative's failure to add any meaning to Jericho's title run. Of course, Jericho makes up for disappointments years later with his unfeeling, imperious heel gimmick and his Michaels feud, which, in my opinion, was the feud of the decade (I’m really looking forward to his third book). As for the Fozzy chapters, I didn't care for them but I’m sure metal heads will appreciate them. less
