review 1: This was a historical novel that I was afraid was veering off into a romance novel in the first half of the book, but it redeemed itself somewhat in the second half. The lead character, Maggie, has healing skills which she puts to use more often than midwifery, as the title suggests, but it was a good story with a lot of historical details about the settlers striving to go west in the 1740s, and the strife with the various Indian tribes. Not top-shelf historical fiction, but it was a good read. My book was missing about 40 pages and had pages from a contemporary novel bound in place instead - I wanted to know what happened enough to search out another copy!
review 2: I really loved the way the main character 'spoke', I like reading accents. Thie scottish lass
... moreis brought to America willingly as an indentured servant. She is also a midwife and healer using herbs. I really enjoyed the midwife and healing side of the character. I did however find it hard to get to know the characters better. I felt them a bit standoffish about their feelings. The book is beautifully set and there is almost non-stop action. I loved the book by the end and was hoping the author had written more like this, but unfortunatelt she did not write about Scottish Lasses in future novels. This is a great on Historical facts and how things were back when America was new. less

18th century Scotland and America. Pretty graphic and gritty. Glad to live in curent times.

a romance novel set in the colonies in the 1760's is still a low-class romance novel.

It was an ok read. A little harsh in places and totally unrealistic in others.
