review 1: I am going to have to agree with most of the reviews here. I love stories about the jungle and adventures....but this falls short. although quick and entertaining enough, it was lacking.His interweaving of the stories was nice and read well, but his side of the story was a bit too whiny. I know he confessed to not really liking camping and not being too outdoorsy, but at a certain point, when you've placed yourself in a situation, you need to accept the difficulties and grow with it. He never did. Get that man a pumpkin spice latte!And I can't feel empathetic for him when he whines about missing his family that he purposely left. And for something that only lasted a month- it certainly felt longer when reading the story.Also, the title was over hyped. The tagline of " a my... moresterious lost city, a WWII spy, and a true story of deadly adventure," it was not. I will give it that it was a quick and entertaining enough read. However, I would read Lost City of Z first if you are looking for a better read. I will also try Lost in Shangri-La next.
review 2: 2.5 stars. This was a relatively interesting read, but I think I was more prepared to read about the romanticized versions of the jungle. The trudging through miles of forest and rain is certainly real... but the book as a whole would be more satisfying with a real conclusion instead of just a "That's interesting." Perhaps this is how the author felt about his epiphany at the end or wanted to leave a bit of mystery, but MAN that was an annoying ending. Glad that there were a few photographs. They were probably my favorite part of the book. less
