2016 A Year In Review

Ah, 2016 no one really loved you did they? I don’t know a lot of people who loved their 2016 mine had it’s up’s and downs but overall it was just ok.

Some of the really good parts were the books I read. But, some of the bad came from books I read. Let’s talk about those, shall we? At the beginning of the year, I set a Goodreads goal of 60 books. Full discloser I almost never make my Goodreads goal and 2016 was no different. I read 56 which I was happy with especially considering I didn’t read anything in May or October. This was the first year I used a spreadsheet to track my reading. I used to just use Goodreads and before that, I just kept a sloppy word document. I found this spreadsheet from a youtube channel called Let’s Read just click here if you want to check it our for yourself.  I really enjoyed using the spreadsheet it was great fun to see all those stats in chart and graph form.

According to the spreadsheet over half of the books I read were mystery thrillers and the rest spread out between genre fiction and non-fiction. It was a pretty typical reading year in that respect. Women authors came in at 78% of the books read men at 18% and both at 4%.  This seems to be how I usually read, I tend to gravitate towards women authors for some reason. I always listen to a ton of audiobooks and 2016 was no different they accounted for 64% of the books I read.

This year my least favorite book was apparently a much-beloved children’s classic A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle. I only read it because Ava Duvernay is directing the movie adaptation. I really hated it like super extra hated it. But, I am still looking forward to the film because everythingAva touches turn to gold.

My favorite thriller/mystery book in 2016 was Forty Acres by Dwayne Alexander Smith. This was an edge of your seat thrill ride if ever there was one. I don’t know if enjoy is the right word but man this was a wild ride. I can’t wait to read whatever Mr. Smith writes next.

My favorite book of the year without question was The Sisters are alright changing the broken narrative of Black women in America by Tamara Winfrey Harris. This book takes a look at those stereotypes that seem to follow Black women around and why they are well basically crap. This was such an uplifting read and something I will be reading again and again especially over the next few years.

So how was your 2016 reading year? What was the best or worst book you read?
