review 1: When I first picked up Ruby Unscripted by Cindy Martinusen Coloma to read, I was rather confident that I could already predict the teenage girl fiction drama plot line. Coloma’s style of writing however was not exactly typical or what I was used to reading. Her sentences and descriptions were to the point, and there wasn’t a lot of Ruby’s thoughts shared with the reader like in your average first person novel. The story starts with a sixteen-year-old Ruby leaving her home city to move a few hours away, along with her mother and younger brother. It is set in today’s time in America. As the story progresses, it’s evident that this main character is going through a minor life crisis to find her identity and where she belongs. She encounters many people throughout th... moree story who challenge her in positive and negative ways. Some help her figure out who she really is, while others push her to change and compromise who she is. Ruby isn’t perfect, and makes (rather typical assumed teenager) mistakes, but in the end she overcomes the obstacles and becomes a better person for it, with minimal consequences.Themes in the book included identity, peer-pressure, changes, and growing up. This book was a pretty easy and light read, and while it was entertaining and there are some “life lessons” that one could take away from hearing of Ruby’s missteps, it didn’t exactly pull the me as the reader in. Ruby seemed guarded to both the individuals around her, and me as the reader. Throughout the course of the novel, she makes new relationships, including with God, but never really seems to go much deeper than the surface and I was left missing character interaction. I gave this book a three out of five stars because it possessed a decent plot line and didn’t bore me completely. I do feel, however, that Coloma had the potential to have more impact with her fiction than she delivered, which was rather disappointing.
review 2: So I didn't realize, somehow, that this was a young adult book when I bought it...but I read it anyways. It's an okay read..but I was rather disturbed by her treatment of a homosexual character in the book, basically chastising Christians who speak out against such sin. Also disturbed that this same character was the friend of the main character with no condemnation of his sin whatsoever. I am sorry, folks, but homosexuality is a sin--the Bible clearly condemns it. Any who practice this sin openly are rejecting God and His Word and as such are not good companions/friends for young people, or people of any age. I am not necessarily advocating being rude or shunning such people...God loves them too and we can show them the love of God, but doing that and being their bosom buddy are two entirely different things. less
