review 1: Debut author, C.J. Flood, delivers a story of intense emotions. Set in rural England, Iris, age 14, is attracted to a gypsy family who sets up camp on her families property, in particular Trick, with an Irish lilt and an intriguing manner. They become close, but have to hide their friendship as Iris's father wants the 'travelers' off his property, and Sam, her older brother just wants someone else to be mad at, unleashing his anger and resentment at whoever is in his path. Their Mom took off a couple months ago, to 'find herself,' finding the marriage unraveling. Their father is moody, drinks too much, and finds trying to handle parenthood on his own, overwhelming. It felt like watching a train wreck, but in the hands of this writer, a story that leaves it ... moremark.
review 2: Even though this book was nothing like I expected it to be, it was still a happy surprise as I ended up really enjoying it! From the beginning you know that something bad is going to happen, but even knowing this, the story is not made to be any less enjoyable and instead actually made me keep reading because I was so anxious to know what was coming. Although I found the main character a little hard to connect to, this was overall still a great read and I recommend if you like the more emotional and sad side of the contemporary genre. less

Gorgeous, lyrical prose, but too similar to Lucas for me to truly adore.
