review 1: HOPE RUNS. BY CLAIRE DIAZ -ORTIZ AND SAMUEL IKUA GACHAGUAThis is a win-win account. Claire and her friend Lara have spent some years globe-trotting and helping the under-privileged from place to place, with a special affinity for children. Their travels take them to Kenya where Claire feels that she is meant to stay and help at an orphanage. She needs to find a reason for staying and looks to find an extra curricular activity for the children. Running requires no expensive equipment so running becomes a daily activity with the goal of running a marathon. She goes to the US to get hundreds of pairs of shoes donated for the young runners. Meanwhile Claire develops a great affection for 10 year old Sammy and decides to be a part of his future. There is a r... moreapport between them, he is talented and she is there to steer him through an education in the States. This story is written by Claire and Sammy. It is a triumph for love, faith, kindness, empathy and dedication. Sammy has undoubtedly strengthened his own love of God by the love he has received from Claire and will continue her example of caring for others.
review 2: This book relates the story of a young California woman whose travels eventually lead her to Kenya where she plans to stay one night at an orphanage before heading for home. One night turned into a year, working at the orphanage, and her life has never been the same again. She finds purpose and relationship that still are a part of her life. This book is also the story of a young, bright Kenyan boy whose life is one tragedy after the other--his father's illness and death, his mother's abandonment, and the family's poverty. At age ten he enters the Imani Orphanage where he has three meals per day, a bed, and clothes--a miracle--for which he is ever grateful. The lives of these two special people intersect, and both of their lives are changed from that point on. This is the story of how God changes their lives and fulfills their lives through each other. This is a must read that will inspire and challenge each one of us to do our part to make the world a better place. I loved the book and highly recommend it. I received this book through TBCN in exchange for an honest review. less
