review 1: I'm usually lured into stories of elite boarding school kids and their dilemmas, which usually involve something lurid, like murder, drugs, depression, or some combination of all three. McAdams doesn't disappoint in delivering the standard plot formula as it relates to privileged, white folk in enclosed academic spaces and he really succeeds here in establishing a good feel of normalcy and pattern to their wealth, which sometimes authors depict poorly. But that's really where it ends for positives in this book. The plot drags out, the characters are tiresome in their adult transformations, and the whodunit twist was predictable. I was flipping pages towards the end, skimming to reach its final resolution, which was at best, tepid. 3 stars.
review 2: Didn't re... moreally care for this book. I feel the author sacrificed the flow of the story ( of two roomates in a private school in Ottawa, both in love with the same girl) for a quirky literary style.One of the boys tells his chapter in a stream of conscience that reminded me of a beatnik in a smoky basement poetry reading. It was annoying and broke the flow of the book. Although I assume he meant this to show how one track minded (sex) boys that age are, it got old really fast and I think he sold that character short. On the other hand, the ambiguous ending I liked, life isn't always neat. I have my own feelings about who did what to Fall! less
