review 1: With this book, Common has proved to be more than just a thought provoking rapper. He is also a great father and, from what his mother says. a wonderful son. I strongly suggest that everyone read this book. And see Lonnie "Common" Lynn for the well-rounded individual he is.I'd also like to thank Common for showing the world that rappers/hip-hoppers are more than what we hear on the radio or see in videos. Don't believe the hype when people tell you that all rappers are drug dealers. Some of them, like Common, come from educated upbringings. I would normally recommend a book like this to young men in high school and college because Common is really candid about his growth as a person, flaws and all. The only thing holding me back is that he is also quite open about his sexu... moreal history, so discretion must be used.
review 2: I think a lot of young black men with enduring black mothers are able to relate to his stories, but I also think it's a great read for anyone that is looking for something real but heart-warming. It's full of life's lessons and Common's transgressions as he evolves from a boy to a still-learning and ever evolving man. Good read. I passed it along to my counterpart who thought the writing seemed a bit edited at parts but otherwise, a poignant read. Some parts are personally striking for anyone. less
